Comparing BSR to Hollywood
British Social Realism
Hollywood
Comparison
British Social Realism texts in comparison to Hollywood texts contain the art of amateurism to add more of an urban theme for the watching audience, which some of them may be able to personally identify with more if they have been involved in a prison situation or anything like that. Whereas realistically none of the audience that watches the Hollywood text will be able to relate to a gang boss lifestyle.
British Social Realism are more about the real life occurrences of characters, and in order to boost this theme a handheld camera convention is used in hand with jerky camera movements to give off more amateurism and make the audience feel like that they can actually see something happen right before them. On the other hand Hollywood texts are more based toward big shot people and their amazing lives of professionalism and action. Hollywood texts don't really make the audience feel like they are there, but rather just a spectator, so the Hollywood text uses still and stable camera shots to appear more professional and so that it comes off as something that the audience will never really be involved with.
Also British Social Realism movies about obviously about Social Realism, but more of the British movies about the subject are usually daunting and dark, for example a young offender being moved into an adult prison, "starring up".This usually results in either very light or very dark colour palates to connote the mundane and tediousness of life as it shows the audience a boring and daunting situation. However in Hollywood movies the palates are usually very colourful and bright as to amaze the audience and awe them with spectacles that suits the eye.
Also there are considerably longer takes in the British Social Realism movie compared to the Hollywood movie, The Hollywood movie has considerably shorter takes to infuse action into the text so that the audience are constantly filled with adrenaline and the need to watch more, as it denotes a fast pace action scene. However British Social Realism movies take longer takes to show the audience a boring and mundane life, which is so typically "British".
Each style of filming here has unique camera shots, for example in Hollywood, to stimulate the audience the camera shots during action scenes or any other will be quick, rapid and exhilarating for the audience to be stimulated and feel the action from the scene, to feel as everything as quick as the adrenaline in the main characters. In British Social Realisms the camera shots are long and sometimes the directors will want to use hand-held recording style to make the audience feel more involved and sense the urban style of film being portrayed. By using handheld the camera won't be still and can be very shaky to further exaggerate the audience's place in the film, as though they're the ones holding the camera, not a perfect and professional camera man.
