British Social Realism Timeline

British Social Realism Timeline

1960's The Loneliness In The Long Distance Runner

This iconic British Social Realism movie represents the freedom of the soul against oppressive captors, with the themes of aspiration and escape based in a young offender's institute. There is heavy amounts of dialect and colloquialism. The sound is accurate for the era it was set in as they use old time English. The teachers and staff usually have posh accents whilst the offenders have thick urban accents, which has connotations of the rich ruling over the poor.

1970's A Clockwork Orange

This controversial British Social Realism movie was
banned when it was first released due to it's very
questionable themes of nihilism, gangs and rape.
The film is based in the north of England, given by
the accent which is old Geordie. Most of the sound
is non diegetic as it's narrated by the main character.

Alex's free will, which ends up not working

Another controversial film about promiscuity of
an Indian couple living in England during the
Miner's Strike. This movie promotes multiculturalism
and has the theme of an adult relationship. There is
heavy amounts of colloquialism and idiolect with
strong Cockney accents. As it is set during a strike
it also has the themes of rebellion and anarchy,
which connotes to how the couple rebel against
a "normal relationship. The music is mostly jazz
which fits in with the era and the culture from
that era too

This British comedy comes from the 1990's and
has an overall light demeanour. The characters
all develop the comedy realism for the audience
and keeps a natural bright lighting with a happy
sound track. The main themes of the film are
comedy and rebellion against culture as the
female main character defies her family's
beliefs to follow her own belief. The music
is light and happy with a melancholic piano
as disaster falls in the background.

2000's Yasmin

This film does the more darker sides of Britain's
racism and discrimination as it follows a set of
very conflicted characters such as Yasmin in
a situation of choosing a culture to follow. The
main themes of this film is aspiration and escape,
racism and oppression in a negative society full
of prejudice.

2010's Four Lions

This film displays the themes of dark reality
but giving it a more comedic themes with
the characters, giving it an feeling of dark,
satire comedy. The characters are what
fuel the comedy and give the audience a
different grasp of the law. The themes are
rebellion and anarchy, with illegal activities
added with 4 characters who have 120 IQ
between them put together
